Midnight Oil were more than just a rock & roll band. From the northern beaches of Sydney to the streets of Manhattan, they stopped traffic, inflamed passions, inspired fans, challenged the concepts of - business as usual - and broke new ground. Midnight Oil (a.k.a.The Oils), were an Australian alternative rock band from Sydney originally performing as - Farm - from 1972, composed with drummer Rob Hirst, bass guitarist Andrew James and keyboard player/lead guitarist Jim Moginie. They were joined by vocalist Peter Garrett studying at Australian National University in Canberra, who's answered an advertisement for a spot in - Farm - and by 1975 the band was touring the east coast.
Late 1976, Garrett moved to Sydney to complete his law degree, then - Farm - changed its name to become - Midnight Oil - and in 1977 guitarist Martin Rotsey joined the band. The same year they established their own record label called Powderworks, which released their debut eponymous album in November 1978, follewed in december by their first single - Run by Night -. A man was important to their
development : their manager Gary Morris who was able to negotiate favourable contracts with tour promoters and record companies and frustrate rock journalists ! Midnight Oil was the greatest band that the mainstream media was not allowed to promote due to their strong stance on human rights and the environment. From their earliest days, they were writing songs about who and what they saw around them.
