"Dance Me To The End Of Love" by Leonard COHEN (R.I.P.)

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone
Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon
Show me slowly what I only know the limits of
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on
Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long
We're both of us beneath our love, we're both of us above
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the children who are asking to be born
Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn
Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I'm gathered safely in
Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love.

Leonard Norman Cohen, a.k.a. Leonard COHEN, born on 21 Sept. 1934 is died on 7 Nov. 2016 (death announced on 10 November) in his home of Los Angeles (California - USA). Leonard was born in Westmount, an English-speaking neighborhood of Montreal (Quebec - Canada), in a well-to-do Jewish family of Polish roots. He was raised and grew up in this city where his father, Nathan Cohen, owner of a clothing store, had created -The Jewish Times-, but died while Leonard was 9 years old. Leonard completed his primary schooling at the Roslyn School in Westmount, and secondary, beginning in 1948, at Westmount High College. In 1951 he joined McGill University in Montreal, where he meets Irving Layton and Louis Dudek, who help him publish his first poems in a student journal, CIV, an abbreviation of "civilization" invented by Ezra.

Leonard was a genius*, Canadian musician, singer, songwriter, poet, novelist & painter. As a teenager, he learned guitar and later formed a group of country folk inspiration, the -Buckskin Boys-. His first collection of poems appeared in Montreal in 1956 and his 1rst novel in 1963. His first songs published in 1967 are anchored in folk music, and sung with a grave voice. In the 1970's, his influences multiplied : pop music, cabaret and the world. Since the 1980's, Leonard was singing accompanied by synthesizers and chorus singers. In all his works, he was often taking up the same themes : love-passion, religion, solitude, sexuality and the complexity of interpersonal relationships.

The poetry and songs of Leonard Cohen have influenced many songwriters and songwriters, and there are more than 1 500 rehearsals of his songs. Leonard was introduced to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1991, to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006, to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. He has been a Companion of the Order of Canada since 2003 and Grand Officer Of the Ordre national du Québec (GOQ) since 2008. His poetic work was
rewarded with the Prince of Asturias Prize of Letters 2011. Leonard has recorded 14 albums in 50 years of career.

* Leonard COHEN, the only serious competitor of Bob Dylan, the 2016's Nobel Prize winner for literature, in the pop-rock universe for his literary approach, has had a rather modest commercial success. His songs, on the other hand, were making the happiness of interpreters from all walks of life. Asked about the honor granted to his old friend Bob, Leonard said, -Giving the Nobel to Dylan is like saying than Mount Everest is a great mountain !-, in short, it was obvious. To the devil the controversy, there was enough place for these two geniuses of language in the world of song ! Rest In Peace great Man...
