RUSH is a musical band in the Progressive rock, hard rock, heavy metal music genres formed in autumn 1968, in Willowdale / Toronto (Ontario -Canada) by guitarist Alex Lifeson (born Alexander Zivojinovich), bassist & lead vocalist Jeff Jones, and drummer John Rutsey. But a few weeks after their formation Jeff Jones left the band, replaced by vocalist & bassist Geddy Lee (Gary Lee Weinrib), a schoolmate of Alex Lifesons. The final name of the band was suggested by John Rutsey's brother Bill.
In their primary incarnation, RUSH drew a heavy influence from Cream, and honed their skills on the Toronto club circuit before issuing their debut single, a rendition of Buddy Holly's -Not Fade Away- in 1973. The single generated little reaction (N° 99 on the RPM charts) and, because of record company indifference, the band formed their own independent record label -Moon Records-.
