SONATA ARCTICA is a power metal band from the town of Kemi (Northern Finland) founded in 1996 by Marko Paasikoski, Jani Liimatainen and Tommy Portimo. The first incarnation of the band created as a hard rock band was named -Tricky Beans- and composed with Tony Kakko (vocals, keyboard), Jani Liimatainen (guitar), Marko Paasikoski (guitar), Pentti Peura (bass) and Tommy Portimo (drums). They have recorded three demos (Friend 'till the End, Agre and Pamppers Peacemaker) which were never sent to a recording labe and occurs twice in Jyrki Sähkösirkus, the live version of a popular music show in Finland at the time. but this -pre-Sonata Arctica- then officiates in the pop / rock genres, very far from heavy metal...

Following a reshuffle of his line-up in 1997 (Pentti Peura was fired and Marko Paasikoski left due to a lack of gigging), the group changed their name to Tricky Means (Means Cunning). A crucial event for the future of the band performed in the same period: Tony Kakko discovered the metal with the album Visions of Stratovarius, and falls under the spell of his countrymen. At that time Tony developed a clean singing style which relies both on falsetto and tenor voices.
