Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, a.k.a. Blackmore's Rainbow and RAINBOW, is a rock, hard rock and heavy metal band, from Hertford (England - UK) formed by Ritchie Blackmore, ex Deep Purple guitarist. The story of the band consist of 5 periods marked by many changes in personnel, due to the suspicious nature of Ritchie. Rainbow was ranked N°90 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. The band has sold over 28 million albums worldwide.

R1: in May 1975, Ritchie after a last concert in Paris, officially left Deep Purple (founded in 1968), to form Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow renamed later Rainbow. To do this, he recruited musicians of -Elf-, a New York group that had taken the first parts of the USA tours of Deep Purple (excepted guitarist Steve Edwards) the time to record the 1rst album. When it was released in August 1975, Ritchie fired the backing members and continued with only the singer Ronnie James Dio until 1979. Jimmy Bain, Tony Carey and Cozy Powell joined the group in September 1975. This team produced 2 albums : -Rising- and live -On Stage-. In Nov. 1978 Dio left Rainbow to start a solo career.

R2 : in 1979, thee British musicians joined them, singer Graham Bonnet, keyboardist Don Airey, former Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover, and this line-up gave the band their commercial breakthrough with -Since You Been Gone-. This group will run until the end of 1980 recording 1 album -Down to Earth-. In November 1980, Joe Lynn Turner and Bobby Rondinelli replace Graham Bonnet and Cozy Powell.

R3 : during years 1980-1984 three albums were released : -Difficult to Cure, Straight Between the Eyes and Bent Out of Shape-. The album -Straight Between The Eyes- gets the most success in the USA and single -Stone Cold- reached the top of Billboard Magazine's Rock Tracks. Album -Bent Out of Shape- with the single -Street of Dreams- attends the departure of Rondinelli replaced by Chuck Bargi Balance group. But, in March 1984, Ritchie Blackmore and Roger Glover joined Deep Purple to reform it and Rainbow split.

R4 : in late 1993 Ritchie left Deep Purple again and decided to re-form Rainbow with all new musicians : Doogie White (vocals), Greg Smith (bass), John O.Reilly (drums) and Paul Morris (keyboards). They records -Stranger In Us All- in 1995. In April 1997, Ritchie Blackmore finally dissolved Rainbow to devote himself entirely to Blackmore's Night, band of medieval inspiration formed with his partner Candice Night.

R5 : in October 2010 even dissolves, the group takes the initiative of Universal Japan to remaster their third album -Long Live Rock 'n' Roll-, then -Rising- in 2011 and -Difficult to Cure- in 2013. At end of 2015, Ritchie Blackmore announced the reformation of Rainbow, for a series of summer festival concert. Ritchie Blackmore said they don't have plans for a new album or world tour, and this reunion was just a few dates for fun...
