What Laurie Maitland likes and doesn't like...
Eric Stewart was born on January 20, 1945 in Manchester, England.
Eric acquired his first guitar at the age of 14 and immediately joined a band which included Vic Steele (later of the Hollies), and they became the Emperors of Rhythm. They supported famous names, including Brenda Lee and gave Eric his first taste of performing, and they even beat The Beatles in a local audition!
In 1963, Eric joined Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders. After Fontana left the band in 1965, The Mindbenders continued to succeed on their own. The band even guest-starred in the Sidney Poitier film, To Sir With Love. The band broke up on November 20, 1968, which was the last night of a U.K. tour with The Who, Arthur Brown, and Joe Cocker.
Using his Mindbenders' royalties, Eric was able to open his first recording studio in 1968, with his business partner Peter Tattersall. Eric was Strawberry Studios resident engineer and session musician, and it was within Strawberry that 10cc was born.
